Welcome Letter from Tina K. Lagdamen, Principal, and Mark Sagado, Vice Principal

August 1, 2024

Dear Parents,

As we begin this new school year, I want to extend a warm welcome and share some thoughts for the year ahead. This time of the year is filled with promise and potential, and I am excited about the opportunities we have to learn and grow together.

Before I talk about the promise of this next year, however, I’d like to pause to acknowledge and reflect on the tragic passing of one of our students this summer. As many of you have no doubt heard, William Killian, who was a  Love kindergartener last year, was killed in a shooting incident on July 10, along with his mother, younger brother, and grandparents. It is an incomprehensible loss and one that we are feeling deeply and know that our families may be feeling deeply.

We will have support on campus for students and staff the first few days of school, and we will be talking to our teachers about how to recognize and respond to signs of distress and grief in their students. There are also resources available on AUSD’s Tools for Family Conversations page. And if at any time you believe your child would benefit from having someone to talk to about this death, please contact me.

William was a happy, friendly, and curious child. We loved him and will hold him in our minds as an inspiration moving forward. Because education is not just about acquiring knowledge, it’s about cultivating curiosity, fostering creativity, and building character. Every lesson learned, every challenge overcome, and every friendship made contributes to the person our students will become.

This year, we are placing a special emphasis on small group instruction and literacy. Our dedicated teachers are committed to providing personalized attention, fostering deeper understanding, and nurturing each student’s unique strengths. In these smaller settings, students will have more opportunities to ask questions, engage in discussions, and receive tailored feedback that supports their individual learning journey.

Additionally, we have set a school wide goal of increasing attendance. Being present in class is crucial for academic success and personal development. Each day is an opportunity to learn something new, connect with peers, and contribute to our vibrant school community. Let’s strive to be present, punctual, and prepared to make the most of each day.

We believe that you, our families, play a crucial role in this journey. Your encouragement and involvement  are essential to your child’s success.  We all have the power to make a positive impact on our school, our community and the world. Let’s focus on the values of social justice, equality, inclusion, empathy and compassion. Understand that small acts of kindness and a commitment to fairness can create ripples of change that extend far beyond the classroom.

Let’s make this school year one of growth, discovery, and achievement. Together we can create an environment where everyone feels valued, challenged and inspired to reach their full potential.

With enthusiasm and best wishes,

Tina K. Lagdamen, Principal
